I'm the same exact way. I only want gift cards so I can just buy something once I need it. I love buying gifts for other people, though.

I finished wrapping tonight and looked under the tree - I noticed that all of the presents are for others, there are none for my husband or myself. We too are in the habit of just getting the things we want when we want them. Come October I try to curb the "want" spending to wrack up ideas and gifts for us at Christmas - but apparently I have failed again. I am not concerned about receiving gifts, but it is always nice to be thought of. When you get over the reciprocating part - not everyone gets a gift in return, some of the true spirit of the holiday comes back.

I agree with you...if I need / want something I get it myself. What is important to me is being with family and special friends during the holidays. We watch classic Christmas movies in front of a fireplace and then sit down for a nice dinner of Prime Rib. That has been our tradition for many years. I dislike the feeling of 'obligation' and giving gifts. I like surprising my family and friends all throughout the year with little 'gifts' if I think they need it. Example...this past summer I bought a small storage building for a friend of mine that lives in a tiny duplex and had no where to store all her boxes of things she had piled up against the walls. Complete surprise and she cried when she saw it...Better than an expected Christmas Present.

I'm 35 and I've come to this point as well. I just enjoy spending time with my family. My clients are all people who either don't have family or have family that they don't get any love or support from, so I feel like having such a great family, regardless of how crazy they drive me, is present and blessing enough! I used to get frustrated when my grandma would say "Oh, I really don't need anything, just get something nice for yourself", but now, I've caught myself saying the same thing. I guess you live and learn?

You're totally not alone. I would MUCH rather buy than receive. I put a lot of thought and energy into my presents, and I love to see the look on peoples' faces when they open a present I've bought for them. When you're a child, it's all about presents. When you become an adult, for those of us who are NORMAL, it SHOULD be more about giving than receiving. :) Getting is great, but giving is far better.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! :)

Maybe because as kids we were all excited about the toys we were gonna get...... all the parties, food, etc.... now that we're grown we have more responsibilities and expenses and we don't get as many gifts so it's not so much fun. I don't care about gifts either but of course it's nice to get some.... I do enjoy going to parties and stuff, but it's obviously not the same as being a kid.

For some people, selecting and giving gifts is an important way for them to show their love for others. For others, gifts aren't really that important; they show their love in other ways. A book that has really helped me to understand this is "The Five Love Languages" by Chapman. I recommend the book to you.

When I was away from home - I didn't celebrate at all
Now I'm in my home town with my parents and we do something small.

sometimes I don't understand these silly social rituals and needing to show your appreciation of someone by buying them material objects either. It just becomes a pain in the a-- sometimes and then you have to worry about offending anybody if you forget them...
