Did you expect to get all nice answers on this forum?
There are many bigots and racists lurking around. That's a normal part of life both in the virtual and the real world. Unfortunate, but got to learn how to live with them. Expect more of those types of answers very shortly, especially after mine...According to some on this forum, I have a dubious knowledge of China, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Anyways...My first image when I think of China is of my friends there. China to me is a great country, diverse and contrasting geographically, culturally, ethnically, historically. I've visited China numerous times since 1984 and taught there in 1986. My experience has been nothing but great. Never once was I treated disrespectfully, in the city or the countryside. On the contrary. I've met wonderful people who are now my closest friends. Maybe I've been lucky. I know others have had very negative experiences and I acknowledge their opinions. This being said, China is not the perfect world. There are some human rights issues, environmental challenges, social and economic ills and these issues have to be tackled without delay if China wants to become a great nation. It's not there yet, it has all the pieces of the puzzle but someone has to put it together. But which country does not face those challenges at some point in their history?

Well in a nut shell. The eplies from YKPHIL and SIMPLYTH, Tell most of it correctly if not all. The people here are friendly, courteous and accomadating. Iti s not forus to say they must abide by Wetern Standards. They have their own culture. It wil be a shame when they fully enter te international world. They wil loose dome of tis culture, gain more cime and become a little less content. Also agree with SIMPLYTH, the fireworks to alert consumers of their store opening is very annoying. This is usuall observed in smaller Cities ad rural areas. Never the les it is annoying at 6 am .
As fars the Governemnt goes. In what Country do the people fully likes thier own Governement and their policies. China is progressing in all areas of Government. It will just take time.

For me it is the warmth and friendliness of the people. I have experienced this from urban officials to rural peasants, where after I had spent night in the peasant home, they got up earlier than usual to make jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) for a meal for me, and when they gave out mantou (steamed bread that most foreigners don't really take to), they gave me the ones with the fruits inside and had the plain ones for themselves - in other words they gave me the best of what they had, AND I will say this is typical of most Chinese. However some seem to they think they are going to China to change it and make them like themselves. I hope they don't change - (too much - I don't like the fireworks.)
People who complain about the spitting (and I've complained about it here AND it is getting better) - Do you complain the same about the professional footballers who seem to be constantly spitting, and other sportsmen and even women and the many people who obviously spit in the West - when no-one is looking, as you can find the evidence every early morning in the streets of towns and villages - people are just more surreptitious about it in the West? (Exists but not quite so prevalent)
Oh, and pingpong!!!! I love it as much as they do.

I feel pride in my country and how it has managed to turn itself around from civil war, disasters to the current economic success it is today. Go DengXiaoPing!
However, I also feel very bad for the huge gap between the rich in the city and the poor in the rural areas, as well as the pollution - it is an awful situation.
