Okay, I'm 18 for starters.

I'm okay with getting pierced, I have 4 lobe piercings in each ear lobe, 3 cartilage piercings in my left ear, an industrial (bar) in my right ear, left nostril, labret (lip), and bellybutton...(Had a septum. :D But took it out.)

A lot, right? So why should I be asking about tongue piercings?

Well, it makes me nervous to have someone put a needle in my mouth...

I know I can keep it clean and whatnot, I'm just being a weenie.

Anyone have any suggestions for how I can cope or handle the fear of the needle?

I'm not scared, the idea of another person putting a needle through my tongue weirds me out. I'd do it myself, but an outside perspective is needed because I want it centered. And I would probably end up making it of center.

I want it because I like piercings and this is the next one I want to get.

Lotus- I'm 18, but I know you can have alcohol in some places, but you have to be sober at first to sign the papers.

Aidan- Don't be a jerk. I'm asking for advice, not criticism. I am making my own decisions and terribly sorry if you don't agree with my lifestyle.

Hunnie- I keep hearing that the clamp is the worst part. Thanks. Sorry about your boy.

Michelle- Yeah, I guess I am just psyching myself out. My labret really didn't hurt at all, so I guess I'm in good shape.

Black Light Angel - You can't "bleed to death" from a tongue piercing. Thats just an urban legend. My mum works at the Medical Examiners Office (Yes, CSI stuff.) and she has never know of any case where someone bled to death because of that.

Trish- Thank you so much for all that you have said, I am going to a very reliable shop, so I don't need to worry about bad employees there. (I hope!) And that sucks that you had two crappy piercers. I just hope I can get a piercer that can do what your third one can do!

I'm getting really excited about the "pretty jewelry" idea. :D

I am getting some friends to go with me, One because she bought me the "gift card" to the tattoo / piercing parlor. And the other because its my boyfriend and he is curious about those kind of things and to take care of my nervousness. :D

Thanks Again!

Yes, the clamp can be the worse part. Unless you go to a good piercer who knows what they are doing. I have had my tongue pierced 3 times - by 3 different piercers. The first two times were done by crappy piercers (live and learn, right?) and the clamp honestly hurt like hell. The second time I got it done the piercer clamped it so hard it started bruising and swelling before he even put the needle in.
The last time was done by a great, APP certified piercer. The clamp did not hurt at all that time. I didn't feel the clamp, and barely felt the needle go through. The only thing I did feel was when she stretched it from 8-6ga (per my request).

That's great that you decided against piercing it yourself, as I am sure you know the risks of that.

I don't have any advice on how to cope or handle the fear, maybe just think of the pretty jewelry that will be left after you get it pierced?

And yes.. you can't bleed to death from a tongue piercing.. or really any piercing for that matter. None of my tongue piercings have bled a drop.

Honestly the needle isn't the worst part, the clamp is. It's really not that bad. I had my tongue pierced for 1 year, then I took it out because I didn't want anything to happen to my teeth. Also, my bf has his done, he bit his tongue by accident, it started bleeding an now he has NO taste bud's without the tongue ring, sound weird, I know. The scariest part is all the after effects to be honest. Don't worry about it, it really isn't that bad and I'm a HUGE baby when it comes to pain. Good luck hun!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year :)

Btw; You NEED to have a professional pierce your tounge, if it's done wrong your tounge can swell up an you'll suffercate, an you could bleed to death, so please don't do it yourself!

I've had mine pierced for about 5 years and i can honestly say it didn't hurt me at all.I was expecting really bad pain and swelling but none of that happened.Don't drink before you get it done cause alcohol is supposed to be on getting pierced(so they say)You go to the dentist don't you?Well, getting your tongue done is way easier and the dentist hurts and uses needles and drills.I ate before i went because i was thinking i'd be off solid food for awhile but i was able to eat that nite.I also stopped and got a frappacino on the way home and wondered if people drank something frozen like that and then had their tongues done if it would numb it,i know i'm a nut case, lol.Just do what they tell you after and enjoy. You'll be fine i promise and try some deep breathing to calm yourself down when you get in the chair.

Stop thinking about it so much.
Personally, it's no worse than the labret and actually a little less awkward as far as having a needle in your mouth. I mean, I don't know about you, but it's pretty standard for a labret to go outside to inside, so the needle's as much in your mouth as for the tongue, almost. And you stick your tongue out and just have to hold it there for a few seconds. No big deal. At least you have things to compare it to.

I got my tounge pierced too and I had the same problem. First of all the guy that peirced it told me to stick out my tounge and close my mouth around it so it didn't feel like it was INSIDE my mouth so much. And also I brought a friend and almost killed her hand squeezing it. But it helped....

The thing my friend had trouble coping with was the fact that the girl he did it for chose someone else to tickle her ... Doesn't anybody love you the way you are?

This might be a dumb question...but can you get things pierced if you had a few shots of liquor? That would calm your nerves. If you are 21 that is.

PLEASE PLEASE don't do it yourself. I can't say that enough. there is a major artery in your tounge which could cause you to bleed to death. What you could do is take your best friend with you and squeeze their hand...I know i know cheezy but my bff made me do it when she was just getting her ears pierced.

haha
