Most H&R Block offices will be open beginning Jan 2. If you have your W2's, or other filing documents, or if you are self-employed and have your information together, then you are welcome to come in and have your return prepared on that date or anytime after.
NOBODY can e-file a return until the IRS is ready to accept them. At this time, they are expecting to be ready on the 12th. BUT, that date could be pushed back, so make sure you stay in touch with your tax preparer.
As far as the answerer who suggested that H&R Block hires people who do not pass the tax course, I would have to vehemently disagree. I am a New Hire Coordinator with H&R Block, and we do NOT hire people who don't pass. I've had to tell two students this year that they don't qualify to work for the company. At least one has already been hired by a competitor - just because they took the class at all. I don't take being called incompetent lightly - I have over 250 hours of coursework in the area of personal income tax.
If you have questions about the individual who will prepare your return, call and make an appointment. Ask how many years of tax experience the person has, how long they've been with the company they work for, and how much continuing education they get every year. If they don't get any, don't go - there are still preparers out there who abide by laws that changed 3 years ago. That's scary to me. Also ask about their experience with any special issues you mayhave, such as owning a business or selling stock. Yes, mistakes happen in every business. Yes, there are people who are not in a position that is the best fit for them. But I have to say that there are a lot of qualified, intelligent, experienced professionals working with and for me, and they deserve a little respect, even on here.
Good luck finding what you need! By the way, if you are looking for an advance on your refund, H&R Block is offering a line of credit this year. There are, of course, fees and qualifications involved, but if you're looking for a short-term money fix, you might want to look into it. Hope this helps!

Bostonian is right. I would give him a thumbs up if I was on the second level. It does not matter who it would be that you have file your tax return. They are all at the will of the IRS when it comes to the start of efile season.
amnesty sucks - You didn't even answer the question. there is no need to bash H & R Block. Even though you disagree with their hiring practices, can't you practice a bit of civility in your posts.

You can go to Block pretty much any time you wish once you have all of your tax docs ready. They can't e-file for you until the IRS starts accepting e-filed returns, sometime around the middle of January.

Assuming all your documents have been received, you can go in and get your taxes prepared and submitted. But the IRS won't look at them (or accept them) until the start of the electronic filing season. The exact dates are up in the air thanks to congress not passing AMT reform until a few days ago; the IRS indicates they are currently implementing the changes and will announce what's going on in a few days.
In short, you can go in and do your part if you have all your tax documents, but you won't get your refund from IRS until they accept them; at a minimum it will be a few weeks in January, and quite possibly longer thanks to the AMT delay.

This year, the IRS will not accept e-files in January. Stand by until they announce when they will begin accepting them.

Why do you want to get your tax return prepared by a bunch of incompetents? Block hires people that took their class and didn't pass it! Many don't know tax law at all!
Actually, even if you did it yourself, you can't file it yet. Tax documentation doesn't have to be mailed to you until 1/31/2008.
