Baptism reflects the death and burial of the 'old man' (adamic nature) and the resurrection of the new man; which is in Christ. However it is only through Romans 10:9 TRUE CONFESSION of the believer that one can be saved and born again...in other words conversion must take place before baptism and you are following the sacraments of the Church which include communion, baptism and feet washing of the saints which Christ did also.

If by physical baptism, you mean total water immersion, it is not to wash away sin (bible says water can't do that, only the blood of the Lamb, Jesus).

It is a PUBLIC symbol of a private commitment to obey and follow the Lord.

It is a symbolic death (as in being cut off from the air that we need to live on) to our old life and the re-emergence or resurrection to a new life of faithful service to God.

Baptism is a symbolism of new birth. We have washed away our sins and are now born "anew". It's basically symbolic of our commitment to God and to Jesus, and that we are free from sin in the eyes of GOD.
Christians wait to baptize until the individual is old enough to make that commitment / decision for themself, therefore holding more of a spiritual meaning than other religions (namely Catholics) that believe in baptizing soon after birth, or the child will remain in "Limbo" if they are not baptized before death.

An outward demonstration of our faith and an act of obedience.
Just to clarify, baptism DOES NOT make you a christian or mean you get a free pass to heaven, even if you are not baptized and still believe in Jesus and that he died for you, you are still a christian and therefore going to heaven.

Physical baptism is a covenantal rite that replaces circumcision in its form of administration -- not its substance. Thought I would give you the Reformed view to go with all the Baptist ones.

First enable me say that i think with all my heart and suggestions what Snow fowl has to declare in this question. I additionally like what another solutions say. whether, i think that i could desire to upload something right here in this concern that often problems me once I pay attention it from nicely meaning Christians who, as i replaced into in actuality taught, that baptism is a trifling 'image' of our courting with Christ. it fairly is plenty extra beneficial than an emblem, and Snow fowl has curiously come to this information, it fairly is a alleviation to pay attention. interior the waters of Baptism The Christ Himself performs the operation of God upon the human heart, and out of this technique makes a sparkling guy or woman, who no longer belongs to themselves, yet now belong to God by ability of the Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15). The be conscious 'image' isn't in scripture, and that i respectfully post that the belief of mere symbolism relating to baptism is a excessive pretext that has led the church for plenty too long on the incorrect music of information. We shouldn't in any respect venture ourselves to rely on what men say, yet fairly what God has to declare in His Holy Writ. God bless all who're certainly searching for certainty in this rely. Love in Christ Jesus
