Ragdolls are a good choice - they were specifically bred for their tendency to go limp when you pick them up. Persians are the most docile cats so look for breeds with Persian in their background like Birmans and Himalayans. For a great all around cat who wants to be doing whatever you are doing look at the Tonkinese, especially if you think you want a dog in a cat package. These guys make great big warm lumps of snuggle!

you know it really depends on the cat. Some cats find comfort in being that close to a person others dont.
I have two cats My female cat has always liked being on my lap and sleeping on me. While my male cat only comes around now and then.
But now that my male cat is geting older hes starting to be a lap cat more and more.
I would say the best thing to do is when you go to pick a cat look at all of them and watch to see if theres a cat that just keeps coming to you basicly let the animal pick you and not the other way around.
I find that the animal that picks you is a much better friend to you than the on you might pick for your self.
Put that with a kind hand and lots of love and youll not have one unhappy day with your pet.

Rag Doll Siamese. The most affectionate cat I've ever owned was an black American Short-hair. He slept on my chest and you could hold him like a baby or sling him over your shoulder. He loved everybody. Best cat I've ever had.

Of course as some of your answerer's state, each cat has it's own personality. However, some breeds are bent more one way than others when it comes to personality types. Just like dog breeds. No one will deny that Jack Russells bounce off the walls and Sharpees (not sure if that's correct spelling) are lazy and laid back. Take a Siameese for instance. They are cocky, funny and extrememly smart. They usually tend to prefer one person, and many times don't care for strangers. Specific breeds definetely have their own tendencies. That's not to say that there won't be the occasional exception to the rule, but the breed will certainly play a huge role in your cat's personality.

You can not breed a cat to sleep on you lap or chest because by nature they are independant animals, unlike dogs that love the affections of their 'pack'. I have a 13 year old Tom cat that spends most of the day asleep on his own where no one can find him - or at least no one can touch him. But sometimes at night. he will sleep on my bed or curl up next to me. When he does, he will not let me leave and will swipe at me if I try.

Cats can always be trined to sleep near you as a kitten, but as they grow older, they are going to want to do their own thing more and more. They are not a 'lap' pet. If you want a lap pet, I suggest a small dog like a chihuahua.

I have had many cats over the years. Certain breeds do have calmer (or otherwise) personalities, such as Rag Dolls DO tend to be less active, but if a cat decides that you are their person, the problem is to get him or her NOT to sit or sleep with or on you.

I have read that wedge-headed female siameese are flighty and tend to not like people - but I have one in my lap right now...

Just like it says in "old Possums Book Of Practical Cats" ---
"They do do what they will do, and there's no getting around it!"

well, i would say that all cats are different, and there's really no particuliar cat that is a lap cat. it depends on how you raise them up. start when they are kittens and hold on to them and let them sleep on you lap, and then they'll get use to it. although i do know that my two cats love sleeping on my lap. they are orange tabby, and calico mix medium hair.

Each cat has its own personality,it dosent matter what breed they are & will decide on its own what they want to do. cats are very independant animals & THEY will decide if they want to sit on your lap or not.
