you need to be honest. You reported it, so you received a "replacement check.... so you need to (make a copy of that first check for yourself) and then return it "in person" to your nearest SS office, and mark down the name of the person who took it from you and the date.

You can't make the excuse to them now that you didn't know better, so be sure you don't cash that first check. You can't cash both checks. And you need to return the initial check so they can issue you a check for the following month. If you don't return it timely then that will mess up the check you're supposed to receive the following month. Believe me you don't want to go thru that mess. I went thru that mess when the post office messed up, and it took me almost a year to get it straightened out.

It's like you report the ck for $200.00 missing then received a replacement for $200.00... great right?

then the initial ck shows up and you think... what the heck? I'll cash it...
Don't! it's a test. return the original ck to social security and show them they can trust you to do the right thing. I have worked with them and they write everything down... what they asked you to do and what you actually did...

Remember, they are Federal Government.... and as such can cause you more headaches than you'd like.... how about for example... holding your next 6 checks... it does not hurt them... but it may hurt you!

You will have to pay back any amount that they pay you over what you are actually due. Don't cash it. Believe me it's harder trying to pay it back than just not cashing it in the first place.

You would be guilty of fraud. Since it is from the federal government, you would be guilty of a federal crime.

Why not use direct deposit for your checks? Then they can not be lost.
