I personally own Guinea Pigs and I think that Rats are the smarter being, working at PetSmart, and majoring in Zoology - I see that Rats are smarter.
I have 2 Guinea Pigs, o I'm not being bias or anything.
Rats are much more interactive and affectionate towards humans. I've seen more rats tricks, I don't think I've ever seen a GP trick. GP's are skittish, but they can be great pets.
Rats are intelligent and curious.
Take a drive to a pet store and see the interaction between you and each of these pets.

Definitely Rats. I used to own two Guinea Pigs and they were evil, but adorable. Still, they are not as smart as rats.

Rats can sometimes creep me out.
I guess rats can find food by themselves, and guinea pigs rely more on their owners.
Guinea pigs are cuter by far, but rats are smarter. That's just in my own opinion.
=P I own a guinea pig! They're awesome.

Rats are much smarter. They can learn to play games such as hide and seek, tag, and much more. Also, rats are much much more social.
Also, they can be potty trained-- guinea pigs cannot.
Rats are as smart as a dog or cat-- jsut smaller and live shorter.
They can learn their name, learn to come, figure out problems, such as figuring out how to fir a bigger box into a smaller area.
Rats can pull up a string thats attached to a box of food- true smartness.
Guinea pigs are much more scared, can learn their name but not as easily, cannot learn games like that, and can rarely be potty trained.
I'm not taking sides-- I have 2 guinea pigs and 2 rats
Best answer me if you like :)

Rats are smarter because they have better memory, learns at a very fast rate, can be potty trained, and have better problem solving skills and are also more social and almost as loyal as dogs. The might even figure out how to open the caged door.

Rats. Omnivores almost by definition are almost always smarter than either herbivores or carnivores and rats are near the top of the heap. They can be taught numerous tricks, are excellent problem solvers, and are often used by scientists who study animal learning, behavior, and neuroscience. For their body mass, their brain is actually fairly large.
