I had two kids go through Navy Boot Camp this year. Both had about $500.00 taken out of their checks for uniforms and they have not received that money back yet. I asked my daughter about it this morning on IM and she says.

Cindy says (7:02 AM):
you have to pay for the issue
Cindy says (7:02 AM):
you dont get uniform allowance til your first yr so i get money in march
Cindy said:
they told us in boot that they took it out of our checks in uniform issue

Both graduated boot camp with about $1200.00 after deductions for Uniforms and gift cards that are issued.

As above the uniforms are paid fr by the government and the Marines do the same thing with some money being put into a gift card thing for you to use at the Navy Exchange for Little supplies you need Paper, envelopes, stamps, shaving gear, and so on. If the Marine came out with 5,000 he must have been an E2 because it is not close for E1 pay for the period. The 1100 your friend got doesn't sound quite right but is close-he was not getting any allowances while there. The BAS is for you not eating in the mess hall and has nothing to do with the family so you will not receive that while in boot camp, the BAH you will get but it might not kick in until a little bit passes so make sure your family has enough to live on i that happens. When it starts paying it will go back to day one so you don't lose money just takes time to do the paperwork.

Everyone who enlist gets a one time $1,500 uniform allowance.

For first time enlistees, you won't actually see any of that money, it is used to pay for your initial uniform issue.

It doesn't matter what service, thats a DOD policy.

For prior service, they still get that $1,500, but since they probally won't need completely new issue of all uniform items, they can pocket part of it.

You actually believe everything your friends tell you ?

There is no way a recruit would even earn $5,000 in salary during boot. They don't get paid that much.

An E-1 recruit makes $1,246.00 a month before tax's.
An E-2 recruit makes $1,510.00 a month before tax's.

So after 8 weeks, an E-1 wouldhave about $1,700 after tax's.
After 13 weeks , about $3,200.

After 8 weeks an E-2 would have about $2,100 after tax's.
After 13 weeks, an E-2 would have about $3,900 after tax's

If you have filled out the paperwork, proving that your married, before you go to Boot.

Then you will be paid BAH while in Boot.

The BAH will be based on where your wife lives.

the $250 that is deducted is on a gift card type deal. No, you do NOT get it back, It will be used for toiletries and underwear and stuff..things you need but will not be provided to you. You DO get all your uniforms provided.

you will NOT get BAS, as all of your meals will be provided to you. BAS is ONLY to provide food for you the Servicemember you will get BAH based on the zip code of your family's location during Boot and A school(if it is less than 6 months long )

HOWEVER..it will be about 6-8 weeks before you actually get paid. It will be retroactive.

What your recruiter told you is the right answer. You get a uniform allowance and it comes out of that. as for the difference of pay one went in as an e-1 and the other went in as an e-3. check your pay scale.

Check this site out. And, this initial allowance is not taken out of your salary.
