The 6000+-year dating comes from several researchers adding up the ages of the people in the genealogy of Jesus in the OT. Dates vary widely because there are missing ages, but they are in the 6000-10000-year range.
Christians have had a number of explanations for the conflict between the biblical account and the geologist record. One is that the first verse in the Bible refers to the time when God originally made earth, then the second verse on down is on the time God remade earth and the universe. So the 6000 years is the start of the human race and not the geological age.
However, science itself contradicts itself in many areas, so the age of billions of years is not conclusive. For instance, we believe we are seeing the light from stars that are shining millions are light-years away - this implies that the stars are millions of years old. New research indicates that the universe may have been a compact universe at the Big Bang, which means that the light that appeared from the stars back then have been reaching us from a far closer distance than previously thought, even as they started receded away from us. The light reaching us from millions of light-years away is predicated on the supposition that the stars have been in a fixed place for millions of years. Can't be proven!
There is not enough space here to go over the many contradictions in science. I am not bothered by the so-called proofs because they are based on suppositions that cannot be proven and are based on the universe being in a steady state.. Many scientists question this model of the universe. That is why we have string theory and other theories - because the old paradigms jsut don't work any more.

I believe the universe has been around for about 13 billion years. There are young earthers, and old earthers. The Bible states that 1000 years to the Lord is one day and a day as 1000 years. So to me, it is saying that time is relative. I believe God operates outside of our time, since He created it.

It's a post-hoc rationalization, kind of like epicycles. At best, it should be understood as either a) a metaphorical rather than a literal timeframe, or b) an ancient myth told by a pre-scientific culture who knew little of the physical world and probably didn't much care about technical accuracy.
