Your question is dependent on many things, such as which state you live in, and in some cases which city within the state.
All ccw laws are not the same and I can only answer for the state of Alabama where I live.
Here if a person is 21 years of age and has no criminal record they can get a ccw, of coarse if you are mentally defective or addicted to drugs or alcohol you wouldn't qualify either.
We are still forbidden to carry a weapon onto any school grounds and most if not all government buildings, court houses and such.
We have what is called the castle doctrine law which our present gov. signed into law some months back. It states that a person doesn't have to flee from any place where they have a legal right to be, it's also been called the stand your ground law.
This law also does something woefully lacking in most states, it protects the person who does have to use deadly force to defend themselves, there family or another innocent from being sued in civil court.
Please understand that I do not have a copy of this law before me as I type this, so I can't assume responsibility for anyone's actions.

In Texas:
$140 for a 4 year permit and about $100 for a CHG class.
You may not retain a permit if you've been arrested for a felony within the last ten years. Must be at least 21 yrs old.
Many restrictions. No brandishing first off. And you must know all laws concerning the concealment of the weapon. And where you can and where you can't carry.
And most importantly if you're stopped and you have your weapon, you must present the officer with your DL and Permit together. This is a declaration that your weapon is present. The officer probably already knows you have a permit when he
'ran-up' your license plate number.

All a permit gives you is an argument in court that you had a right to have a weapon and that you feared for your life.

In Minnesota you would have to attend a conceal carry class which explains the legality issues with carrying and then go and shoot on a range.
After completing the class you take a copy of the class certificate, a copy of your ID and the form to your local sheriff. The sheriff would do a background check which may take about a month and if your all clear you get your permit and if not then there is some issues going on.
The permit in Minnesota is good for 5 years and also used to buy pistols.

It varies greatly from state to state. You'll have to be more specific.

In New York state, you're required to write an essay about why you need to get a permit for what, and if they give you one, which is unlikely for most people, you're only allowed to carry your pistol at times stated on your permit for protecting buisness money or valuables. You're not allowed to carry a pistol to protect yourself. Further restricions abound in New York City, which has one of the highest crime rates in the U.S., right up there with D.C., where nobody can own an operable firearm.

If you jump across the border to Vermont, there are no restrictions, anyone can carry at any time in any way they see fit, so long as they pass the federal NICS check to purchase a firearm. Vermont also has one of the lowest crime rates in the entire U.S.

I think you're going to have to tell us which State you're concerned about, because this law is different from State to State. God Bless you.
