as opposed to what?

Are people of faith, well, if you boil it down, agnosticism is a faith too. A faith that you are on your OWN! That there is NO one there to SAVE you.

Are people of faith, by definition, offensive? Where is it said that you are free from being offended? *laughter*

It's ALWAYS about you, Phaedra! *laughter*

I consider myself an agnostic atheist. When people ask what my religion is, I have several different responses depending on how much time I'm willing to spend on the subject, and whether I think the discussion will be worthwile (or if it will be similar to arguing with a brick wall). The least engaged response is simply that I'm not religious, while the most engaged is that I'm an agnostic atheist (as this usually requires some explanation). Other than that, I usually say I'm an atheist before I mention my agnosticism, as the former is really a more accurate response to the question.of religious belief.

I don't avoid calling myself an atheist to avoid being offensive or confrontational. I'm just stating my beliefs and responding to their query. If they take offense to my beliefs, that's their problem.

I have no idea why people do anything but I always have to laugh at those that think their neither a theist nor an atheist.

You can be an agnostic/theist or an agnostic/atheist but agnostics are without question one or the other. Because honestly theist and not-theist is all there is.

I was agnostic before i was atheist because i hadn't really felt there was or wasn't a god. Then i realized the only thing that was stopping me was the fear that there was. I started to learn more about the world around me and scientific theories on such things. It had nothing to do with not wanting to offend someone because me being atheist shouldn't offend anyone.

I think some want to be confrontational, some starting a conversation and some want to just end the subject. Some are agnostic because they are seeking and some are because they don't care to learn more. Could be any number of reasons. It never pays to make a blanket judgement.

Peace!

No as an agnostic, I'm simply not that interested in religion itself, only in the effects of it.

If someone wanted to be non confrontational - all they have to say is - My beliefs are personal.

I'm not agnostic...
but personally,
I think they say it because they are.
Maybe some are indecisive
but I think a lot just don't want to claim to "know"
something they don't,
or "believe" something they're unsure of.

...and really there's nothing wrong with that,
as long as they're not out directly insulting those who believe differently.
[that could be said about anyone, in any religion, belief or lack thereof by the way.]

blessed be!

I tend to think that it is because that is the way they think. I would be more agnostic except that the research I've done seems to be fairly conclusive.
