When I add a work to a spell checker dictionary in ms word or Firefox it realizes that the word is ok when I type it in exactly but doesn'tsuggest the word when I misspell it. Is there a way to change that?

You need to right click the words in order to see the suggestions for the misspelled word in case it replaces your word with a wrong word. Unless you spelled the word so bad that it cannot determine a possible match.

Unfortunately NO. It only recognizes that the word is not misspelled because you told it so. It doesn't know what the word means to offer other suggestions.
