Being unchurched.

It could be any number of things. I had seen an episode of Twilight Zone (or some such) where the people woke up in an empty toy town - and in the end they discovered that they were dolls in a doll house and out of the sky came this big hand to pick up it's toy. It was shortly after that that I rejected the notion of a personified God and all that entails - for that imagery was so distasteful to me, it made that line of thinking no longer bearable for me.

There are those struck by injustice or tragedy who blame God and therefore turn away. There are those who have had injustices done to them by people of the clergy, zealots, etc. who need to distance themselves from that group and mind set. There's lots of good reasons - but I tell you most people I meet who say they don't believe in God, very often they say they do believe in some kind of energy powering this existence. Isn't that God? There are many paths to God and a million ways to express the Divine in this existence - and the word "God" is now fraught with connotations. Could it be that our understanding of the Divine is evolving (out of our own treatment of each other) or growing? While there is no way to truly know the Unknowable, it's nice to see us moving down the path. It seems a beautiful thing to me.

Peace!

What leads you to believe that Thor, Osiris, or Amateratsu do not exist?

Ludicrous tales, wild claims, broken promises, all made with a total lack of evidence and followed by the catchphrase, "have faith."

Crazy policies made in the name of God. Atricities done in the name of God. Dishonesty and slander perpetrated in the name of God. Pious fraud in the name of God. Lies, power-mad corruption, abuse of anyone deemed an unbeliever...

In other words, just believe. Don't question, just trust that all this nonsense isn't nonsense. Believe and you'll get a great reward...after you're dead.

Right.

Lack of proof for a god. Perhaps I don't want to be naive and believe all that I'm told or read, with no questions asked.

The unanswered prayers of a child. If the faith of an innocent child isn't enough for God to listen, why would God listen to an older person?

That there is no evidence for anything the god had claimed to do.

Look at this way, do you believe that Zeus, Thor, or Raven are real gods? Why not?

Edit:
The same process that Christians and Atheist use to discount the existence of "older gods" is the same is the same one that atheists extend to the Christian god.

This is what lead me..."I talked to God, and he never talked back. I asked and he never answered. I prayed and he ignored. I begged and he did nothing. I walked away and he disappeared. That's when I realized that all those times, I was alone and that there is no god. I'm Atheist now."

The lack of ANY evidence for ANY god could be one... shot in the dark here I know *sarcastic*.

*Note: It's having no belief in god. It's rare to find someone who has belief there is no god.

religion is taught to you, it's also a theory, the bible was NOT written by "god" therefore can not be the owrd of "god", also the bible also says that certain things we feel as human beings, which we all are, are wrong and sinful.
so why WOULD i believe in god?

Most of those who refuse to be open to believing, who passionately "know" the unknowable (that a particular anything does not exist) have likely been hurt in some way and base their rejection on that pain. Just guessing.
