it looks like a crown, short layers at the top of the hair

The crown of your head is toward the back just as the head slopes to the back of the head.

It would be layering you hair in that area.

Crown just means the top of your head.
So, crown layers are just layer at/near the top of your head. They give volume.
It's prevelent in alot of scene hairstyles in order to give the appearence of more volume.

In the last one, the hair she sticks up are crown layers.
