A friend accepted a job 4 months ago; he resigned his previous job in good terms. The job he accepted was not a good fit. My friend and the company decided that it was best for him to leave. So he asked his former employer if he could go back to work. Former employer accepted. If he is offered another position (another company), will it be a wise move to accept it? If he stays with his current employer he will not advance professionally.

Yes, of course it would be a good idea. He can't stay where he is, and if the company is willing to take him back, that means they value him as an employee.

How could he possibly advance in his current job if they mutally agreed it would be better if he left?

It is either the old job, or find a new one. Wish him the best of luck!
