Whenever people say "teens these days have such bad taste in music" I get pretty defensive, but then I think about it and a lot of the people around me DO listen to a lot of bad music (in my opinion at least) and there really is no single person around me that really actualy listens to progressive rock.
So are you surrounded by people with good taste (in your opinion) or do you stand alone?
What do you listen to? What do they listen to?

"All by myself...."
I'm afraid all the 'music listening' people around me are all you guys {and gals} here on R&P!
My cousins listen to absolute rubbish {one of my cousins is very into rap & hip-hop, another was shocked to discover the music his mother liked was 'great' [Classic Rock]!}, but even when I was at school 9 years ago, my peers listened to modern 'pop' nonsense.
Each of my parents shares a small part of my musical tastes, but it mostly just seems to be me :(
I do try to suggest the best bits of music wherever possible, but it sometimes seems to be an uphill struggle. But I will keep trying!

Such interesting questions Sara! This one really caught my interest. Why the hell are the good questions like 3 or 4 pages back?
A lot of people at my school listen to all the hardcore/emo/screamo crap. I don't like a lot of it, some listen to it just for the guitars (which aren't half bad). I hate when people diss my music, which doesn't happen a lot, because the people I hang around with listen to Rock (All the good, old stuff), or are familiar with it and have an appreciation for it. People usually diss my artists, usually being Rush (Prog, like you mentioned). Probably because me and another buddy of mine are the biggest fans in school. Prog just seems to have some special label, that says "the suck" for most people who aren't really drawn to that kind of music. Everybody has their own taste, and I can respect and accept that, but I really don't see why someone would like a song where someone just screams into a mic and metal guitars play around him/her. Firstly, you can't understand whatever the hell he/she's trying to say (If you can understand, then you've got talent. Screamo bands actually have lyrics too). Secondly, it has no substance in my opinion. All it is, is random strumming patterns, a quick solo in there somewhere, and more vocal abuse. All this Emo/Screamo is just a fad and will dissappear after a while. I don't even know when or why it became popular with the people around me.....Rock (as in GOOD Rock) will come back one day, with the resurgence and touring of various bands from those days, and teens/kids will learn to respect them once more, and wonder "Why the hell did we spend all that time on Akon or Aiden?". Today's music isn't what she used to be that's for sure.

I think some people have okay tastes in music. A lot of people in my school listen to sucky modern bands and popular hard rock/heavy metal/classic rock type bands as well. I'm guessing the Guitar Hero series is the reason for the latter stuff. It kinda annoys me when they talk about bands like The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix or The Doors, because chances are they only know a couple songs by them (in fact, they probably don't even know ten songs by those modern artists too!).
Overall, I'm surrounded by young teenagers, and I must say I don't enjoy most of the music they listen to. I dread the couple seconds after announcements when the school president plays music from his iPod.

A lot of the kids in my school only listen to whatever is popular. This is a tough question though because everyone has different tastes. But then they are the kids around like I mentioned before who listen to what is popular. But then they are kids who listen to music that isn't "popular." Even if it's rap or pop or rock. Like me, most people I know don't know what the hell I'm listening to, and then they hear it and put a stereotype on it and me like all ignorant teens do. I'm kinda getting off on a rant so I'll shut up now :D

Well none or very few people I know are as much into music as I am, and even fewer like most of the same music I do, but I won't say they have bad taste. I think that they either don't like music that much, or are too heavily influenced by what's popular or what they hear around them so that they've never taken the time to look deeper to either older stuff or newer stuff that isn't on the charts. I like to assume that most people who just listen to the top of the charts **** would have good or at least respectable taste if they took that time.
But if you mean it this way, I don't think most of the people at my school listen to good music at all. Too many are just fine listening to what's cool, because being cool occupies most of their time.

No, in my opinion I am /not/ surround by people with 'good taste'. [Though I personally dislike that term.]
I listen to Hard Rock [well, Guns N' Roses] and Gothic Rock mostly - though there are many other genres and sub-genres thrown into the mix.
I don't personally surround myself with people - I'm not too fond of people to be honest. But the people that I /have/ to be around - the people in my school - don't have good taste, to me.
From what I see and hear, most of them like Rap. Now I'm fine with some Rap - but when all you hear in the bloody corridors is that /stupid/ Soulja Boy song - you start to wonder what 'the youth of today' are actually thinking. Seriously... =/
And there's this new song that they're obsessing over by a UK rapper from the UK called Bruzer or Bruza or something.. and that's nearly as bloody annoying.
And then there are the small group of 'rockers' [and I use that word oh so loosely] that listen to MCR and FOB...
I remember when two of them came to me while I was enjoying a cigarette in peace, and they asked me if I listen to rock, I said yes, they exclaimed "me too" and went on to list the most corporate.. urgh.. bands around at the moment.
I sat there in disgust.
I stand alone.
[Thanks, I think I needed to get that off my chest.]

Besides a few blessed people I can count with my fingers, everyone around me has some kind of bad taste in music. Mostly it's because they listen to the radio. Sure there is some good catchy stuff to listen there, but nothing you can sink your teeth in really. I think what's being played on the radio and what the media is exposing us to is an insult to those who like good music AND to those who are too young to tell the difference, and more likely follow a fad and their peers.

The old stuff mostly and yeah a lot of the people around me do listen to garbage. Brittney, Jessica and J-LO. Yikes! They know better than to play that when I'm around. Laughs.
The funny thing is because of my age, listening to the music I do now isn't such a thing as it was when I was in high school and listening to what was considered "parents music".

My group of friends here on Yahoo R&P have most excellent taste in music. I would list all fo You but You know who You are.
Unfortunately the people I am closest to in real life either listen to country or modern top 40. And yes it's an unending torture.
My Wife and Her Brother for example constantly bombard Me with everything from Celine Dion Savage Garden and Reba McIntyre to (Shudder) Fall Out Boy.
You don't know how I suffer here.
Excellent Question Sarah...Star For you

I am surrounded by younger people than myself (i am 44)
I find that todays youth only want to hear new stuff (not all , but a large percentage)
They listen to any crap if it is new and automatically write off anything that is more than 1 year old.
I find some new songs i like and appreciate but i predominantly prefer classic rock .
I find they are more interested in what the artists look like as opposed to what they sound like.
I even find some people enjoy a song until they find out it is an old artist and their taste then suddenly changes.! weird ,man. lol
