If so, have you ever caught anything on it? I recently got a shad and sunfish version of this lure, are these types any good and for what types of fish?

I have bluegill one and a Rainbow trout one that i use mainly for spawning season. The bigggest largemouth that I've caught on the Bluegill was around 8 pounds and the biggest on the trout was 5 pounds. Just toss them into the nest and let the momma bass do the work.

The Castaic baits were made originally for targeting large bass in Lake Castaic. That lake was know for having a large population of big Florida strain bass, and it was expected that a world record would come from this lake. In fact one fish was caught in the late 1990's that would have been the record had the angler kept it alive and weighed it immediately. Instead it was allowed to lay in the bottom of the boat and due to dehydration, he just missed the record.

Because of the chance for a record there were many people who made large lures just to cast for these fish, the Castaic soft bait one of them. They are popular for large mouth and Stripped bass, with the most common bait being the rainbow trout pattern. Both of the lures you mentioned would work for either species, with the sunfish having the edge for large mouth. I'd fish them along the shore line around the edge of the weeds and brush for bass. Strippers feed heavy on shad when the shad are concentrated in schools, so the shad bait would be very effective at these times.

I believe that you had asked and earlier question about trout fishing in the San Bernardino area. If you are going to be in that area you might take a look at Silverwood Lake. Both lures would be worth a try there.
