a window being blown out and rain coming into my apartment killing my laptop and computer monitors?

This happened during the recent Noreaster.

Photographic evidence will help. You will also want receipts for the replacement equipment or the cost of repairs. A statement from the repair facility stating the apparant cause of the damage will help as well.

Keep in mind that you must reduce your loss by $100 and then further by 10% of your AGI. Any loss beyond that will be deductible IF you itemize your deductions. If you have no other itemized deductions it's very likely that you'll get no deduction at all.
