If you mean advertising for a roommate online, there's nothing wrong with that.
You just have to make sure you meet them in person before letting them move into your place. The last thing you want is a jerk...or even worse, a psychopath.

You are a month to month tenant if you didn't sign a lease. The couple is taking advantage of you and they realize it. I would give notice to the landlord. With a month to month lease, you usually give notice on the first day the rent is due and then be out by the end of that month...a written 30 day notice is required by law. I would also give notice to the couple that you are moving. Because people have moved out and others moved in, I don't know what to say about the landlord or the rent due. You become severally liable with rent meaning that any one of you is responsible in total for all the rent. I would talk to my roommates and the landlord but follow up with return receipt letters so that you have proof you have given notice to everyone. I'm pretty sure that is all that is required by the law. Morally you have been a real stand up person for the others by paying the rent but surely they realize you cannot support them forever. My last bit of advice is to be sure you're not jumping out of the frying pan into the skillet. Be very careful who you move in with.

True story....a friend of mine decided to do what you are contemplating. The guy who was going to move in with him mailed a check for 2 months rent and a security deposit. He asked my friend to deposit the check right away (which my friend did not) The guy said he would be moving in at the beginning of the following month. When the check was deposited, it turned out there was no money in the account. In the meantime, the prospective roommate called and said he changed his mind and wanted his money back. Fortunately, my friend did not mail a refund before the original check cleared. You do have to be careful.

You can find people to "interview" by the internet, but you really should meet with them and check references or whatever. Actually call people they have lived with or rented from in the past if you don't already know them. I would not choose and finalize things by the internet.

Might be worth a couple bucks to get a background check on line or references. (and call them). Otherwise, I don't see a problem.
