Looking for something for the relatives to read when they come over for Christmas. My GF is a neat freak and I don't want to ask everybody to take off their shoes.

You might consider providing inexpensive slippers for those who feel uncomfortable bare footed. A sign requesting shoes be removed is adequate. You may also consider asking your gf to "get over it".

Let your girlfriend do the asking. She is the one who is the neat freak. I would not ask a person to take their shoes off unless they were muddy. Some people have a problem walking without their shoes. They need the support. And shoes are a part of ones ''outfit''. Personally I think that it is rude. Purchase some extra matts and rugs to use on the outside and inside of the door and forget it.

No sign required, plus people could claim they did not notice it.

Get a big collection of inexpensive slippers, so people can have warm feet.

Adapt your entry so it is easy for people to sit and remove their shoes, and have the slippers handy.

Have your own shoes on the floor by the door, so it seems normal in your house.

You might want to give them a heads up that they will need to remove their shoes when you invite them. That way they can bring slippers if they choose. Unless people's shoes are wet/muddy, etc. I would never ask them to remove their shoes. I find it tacky and rude.

How about. "Please leave your shoes by the door. Thanks ~"
Also, get a basket and fill it with various sizes of slippers and new socks for people to put on their feet if they so choose.

Please remove your shoes?

It's not unusual for people to require guests to remove their shoes.... especially in winter.
