The other guys are absolutely right, inverter usually means a small device to change car battery type DC voltages into AC voltage like the outlets in your house.

Inverters are also used to convert the DC of solar energy into AC that a house can use.

Sometimes, the term "inverter" is also used loosely to mean a power supply that converts a low voltage DC to a higher voltage DC.

Finally, in digital logic, an inverter is a "not" gate, that converts a logic 1 into 0, and vice-versa.

An inverter is a semiconductor device that inverts DC electrical power to AC. Usually DC power from a battery is inverted to AC and stepped up to 110 Volt to supply power for appliances or uninterrupted power supply for persinal computers.

this would allow you to use a 24o volt applicance in your car whilst on a journey etc
