1876 was not the first use of pills. They go back much further than that - to apothecaries certainly earlier in the 1800s. I just finished writing an article on medical care in the American Civil War. One of my sources noted that over one million opium pills were given to union soldiers during the Civil War alone.
I'll have to check into this further, but I'd bet there were pills available at apothecary shops in the 1700s and earlier.
Good question.
From site noted below :
In Britain, the Apothecaries Act of 1815 and the Medical Regulation Act of 1853 were both passed to decrease unlicensed medical practice. Quackery led to the immense popularity of Morison’s pill. Morison’s pills contained a violent purgative, cream of tartar, which is “very injurious,” and aloes, which “required great care in their administration” The pills promoted explosive bowel movements supposedly cleansing the system of impure elements, all of which would be flushed out. Patients were recommended to take as many of these pills as possible. Some patients took 30, 40, and 50 pills at a time. These pills were distributed in large amounts not only in England, but also throughout the world.

Pills were invented in Stockholm, Sweden at the Karolinska Institute in order to deal with patients who needed medicine but were afraid of needles. Oddly the Chill Pill was the very first pill! They used it to calm people down so they could give them a shot. It wasn't until later that they got the idea to just put the medicine from the shot into the pill. That was around 1876.

No one knows who invented pills...some cave man probably mushed up a bunch of medical herbs with honey and rolled it in a ball to make it easier to sallow....

The chinese have been making pills for more than a thousand years. There's an article related to it here:

They apparently made their herbal remedies into standardized little black pills, using honey as a binder.
