i run track and everyone tells me that im good at it. im going off to college next year and i dont want to run. i want to get into medical school so i want to focus on school not track. when people ask me if im going to run track in college i tell then no and they make a big deal about it telling me that im lazy and im throwing away my athletic career away when i could go so far. i understand what everyone is saying, but my goal in life is to become a doctor not a professional athlete and i don't want anything to get in the way of that. no one is understanding that, not even my parents! i dont know what to do anymore...... its my life, so everyone should respect my descion, right?

I was a state champion high jumper in high school, and I understand where you're coming from. I didn't even tell my parents about the scholarship offers because I had other plans for myself, and I knew better than anyone else my time management skills. Looking back, it would have been fun and I could have had some good travel experiences, but I also would have missed out on other things I got to do. If you truly don't think it is best for you, then don't join the team. Do, however, stay in shape and continue training so that some day when you decide you're going to run a marathon, you can. Also, the running will be a great stress reliever when you are loaded down with 18 credits, mad at your boyfriend, and dealing with sorority B.S

Well Bee, i respect your ambition totally to pursuing your career as a doctor, heres a little piece of advice, everything depends within you, do you feel that you arent capable of multi tasking? As in, if you run, do you think it will get in the way of your studying, if so, thats your control over it, only you can control what and wont be capable of your doing, so unless you believe doing something you love will get in the way of doing something for your future, your in no luck, but of course they should respect your decision, if you simply say it will get in the way of my studies, theyll much more understand, most likely lay out a routine for you, but if your mind is really set on becoming doctor, all work and no play, they should respect the kind of person you are, i told you what you should do, now go do it

hope i helped you, i didnt mean to be harsh so please dont take offense

take care

I try to reduce decisions down to simply logical terms.

If you are wealthy and don't need scholarship money, then don't worry about track. If you ain't wealthy and/or mom and dad are gonna have to pay, re-think the scholarship idea.

If you don't do track, keep running anyway as part of your lifestyle. Nothing is more heart-breaking than to see tired doctors, or doctors who are ill prematurely.

Good Luck

10 years from now it will not matter. You can be a former college athlete or a financially well-off doctor. What do you want to be?
