My parents were out of power for around 8 days because of that ice storm. I visited them for a few days and 2 of those were days without power.
I noticed that people a few miles down the road, who had already gotten their power back, were decking out their homes with Christmas lights, outdoor light up decorations, etc. Now I know it's the season for that, but I found it to be really inconsiderate of them when they knew that there were tons of homes without power.
Is it just me, or do you guys think that's rude too?

I find it rude because it was if they were being show-offs about it. You can have Christmas cheer without all the snazzy lights, they could have just lit up their tree and it would have been practically the same.
You guys wouldn't it a large meal infront of a starving person would you?
And since someone asked, I am 21. And yea, I already know I'm immature...all of my friends would agree haha.

In a way i feel like both. I feel it's rude because those people know that there are other people around the neighborhood or the city that do not have power and they should not be showing off their power by lighting up their houses like a christmas show. At the same time I feel that they are not rude because like you said It is the season to do that and in their minds the last thing they are thinking about is to offend anybody and they want to make people feel better and happy by lighting up their house. I understand where you are coming from. I would be upset and feel like they are rude too if I was in your situation.

That's not rude. They are not going to let Mother Nature ruin there Christmas. They still feel bad that the people down the road don't have power yet.

Sorry, but I don't find that rude. Happy that their power has come back, these people have taken it upon themselves to deck out their house with some Christmas cheer...
If they were standing in front of your parents' house saying "Na-na-na-NA-na," I'd have a different answer. And you're talking a few miles away?? Do these people even KNOW your parents?
I think you're being a wee bit too sensitive here.
But merry Christmas!

I'm sure those people put up Christmas lights at Christmas time every year. Doing the same thing at the same time they do it every year is not showing off. Showing off is going out of your way to flaunt something. Putting up lights like you have done maybe every year of your life doesn't qualify. I guess misery just loves company.

I highly doubt they were trying to show off their power. Most people don't think twice about putting up lights around the holidays.

First of all, you're not immature. You have the maturity of a 22 year old.
Secondly, it is not rude in my opinion.
edit: I recently watched Eddie Murphy's skit about how the other little kids back in the day flaunted having McDonalds while he had to show his homemade Wonderbread Greenpepper burger. If your neighbors were singing like those little kids having McD's "We've got Lectricity, we've got Lectricity"...they should be ashamed. c'mon now

What were they supposed to do? Go into mourning because your parents did not have power? Please quit feeling sorry for yourself. Did you ever wonder if the very people you are complaining about helped others? Don't you eat at least twice a day even though there are people who go to bed hungry? Don't you have a roof over your head even though some are homeless?

If they have power then why shouldn't they use it? It's unreasonable for one to expect them to limit their use because others don't have power. After all, it wasn't their fault the neighborhood lost it in the first place.
