Just this past summer I went to a local gun show and compared the AK-47 to the AR-15. As far as price goes, the AK-47 was around $600.00, but compared to the accuracy, cost and availability of ammo and access to parts if anything were to break, the AR-15 won hands down. I can swap out the barrel and the receiver with minimal effort. I paid $750.00 for the AR-15, but with everything that was considered, I didn't mind spending the extra money. There are allot of remakes of the AK-47 out there so be careful of what you are buying. You may see prices range from $350.00 to $750.00 for the AK-47 and it's all in the quality of the parts. The AR-15 is a revised M-16 and has been a main part of the military armory for many years.
Good Luck

I have a Romanian with the front pistol grip that cost me $319.00 two years ago, with two metal 30-round mags, a sling, an ammo pouch and small tool kit, not including shipping and background check.
It's a WASR 10 converted from low-capacity mags to the high-cap ones. I can't use some pretty common mags, though.
Fishtremble is right -- Impact Guns in Utah isn't bad at all. I've bought several things from them.
He's also right about the $ -- if I knew what I know now I would have gotten something a bit more expensive but better than the WASR I have now.
Old Yugoslavian guns are very well built, but seldom have chrome-lined barrels. Yugoslavia has no native sources of chrome, and they had a different kind of communism than the old USSR so the Soviets wouldn't sell it to them. Neither would the U.S.
Other kinds of old East Bloc guns are a mixed bag, some great, some awful.
If you can afford it, get the more expensive Russian or old East German. They have the chrome-lined barrels and tend to be the best made as well.
"Arsenal" brand, made with some Bulgarian and some U.S. parts, in Texas, I believe, are also high quality, but expensive.
This Romanian one for $390 is pretty good, too. It imitates the appearance of the German Wieger, but it is definitely an AK-type, and most AK parts and accessories should fit it.

Good luck, BE SAFE, and have fun.

Depends what kind. Anywhere from $250-600. Mak-90's tend to be the most expensive. Whereas WASR-10's are in the low to mid $300's. I've seen a few with synthetic stocks which are under $300. I haven't done too much research because I haven't had that much to spend on them, but that is just from casually looking at gun shows, stores, and online.

A Yugo Model 70 with two magazines can be had for under $600. http://www.impactguns.com/store/RI1285-X.html
If you'll look around their site, there are others selling for as low as $300. You'll get what you pay for when it comes to rifles, and AK-47's are no exception.
