spray him with a water bottle when he tries to get out the door.

He just has to get used to not going out anymore. It usually takes about 2 weeks maybe a month at the most. But one thing if your gonna keep him indoors only then do not let him at all. Cats are very regimented in their ways whatever there used to thats what they want to do. If he's used to going out he'll want to go out. But you can break this you just have to stick to not letting him out at all. My cat was an outdoor cat for a year till I took him and made him indoor only. It took a little while but he got used to it eventually. Your vet is absolutely right about waiting to neuter him. They can do it younger but there is definitely a higher chance of something going wrong. My brother's cat was neutered at about 6 weeks old and died a week later from it so I wouldn't do it till at least 6 months to be safe.

My kitten is now 6 months old and she still does this. It started when I let her out on a harness. I wouldn't recommend taking her out AT ALL, or she's going to get too used to it, and she'll go too far when she escapes so that you won't find her. Just keep her indoors all of the time, she'll eventually forget about "outside".

Purchase a bell. When you take your cat out with the harness on ring the bell. When you bring your cat in the house ring the bell. When your cat is old enough to go outside by himself ring the bell each time you let him out or bring him in. This way when you are looking for him and he hears the bell he will come running. Give him a treat each time so he has something good to look forward to when he comes running to you. Good Luck. He will be fine.

tell ur mom if he's indoor outdoor all he's gonna do is bring in dead animals and fleas from the outside.
or get hit by a car....it happened to my cat :(
as far as deterring him from going outside....try putting tinfoil
in front of all the doors so if he wants to look out he's got to stand on it. they hate that.
good luck.
my kitty is the same way, and when he does get out, we have to go chasing after him and he just cowers in the bushes like a scaredy cat :)

theres no reason why a cat cant be happy and contented if he stays indoors. My little cat is an indoor cat and he is so happy. just make sure he has lots of toys and things to keep him occupied and he will be fine!

Tell your mother to ask any vet weather or not any cat should be an outdoor cat.
Any vet worth his degree (and I work with 3 of them) will tell her that it is one of the worst things you can do to a cat.

As to the cat, try to distract it with a toy or the like when it is at the door.

hmm do you have a kitty door, open to show the cat it outside but it well take time to understand, onces the cat understand what is that cat door is then it well go out and in on it's free well but it's still young so it well be a scaredy cat abit, treak it, like putting it's food out side, so it well know theres food out there.

Can a safe outdoor enclosure be built so that the cat can spend time outside and not be hurt by dogs, cars, kids and other animals?

dont take him out on a harness it tempts him more to want to go outside more .. provin fact cats live longer inside than outside ( depending on how comditions are inside )
but they can get diseases out side and i would rather u wait tll he is old and is neutored and all his needles and rabies shots before he goes out and if u get him fixed hes most likely to lose his interest with the outside...
