I thought there was only standard yorkies but as I search more their is allegedly standard, teacup, and toy. But I am confused cause I read somewhere that people just say that to fool you and that the dogs are mistreated at puppy mills. I have no idea what a puppy mill is. So if anyone could clear up this up for me it would be much appreciated. Thank You

A Puppy Mill is a place that breeds dozens or hundreds of dogs simply to make money. Little to no vet care is given and once the females can no longer produce, they are either killed or sold off. http://www.stoppuppymills.org

There is only one type of Yorkie. They are in the Toy Group. "Teacup" is a designation used by bad breeders to sell small Yorkies, typically unhealthy dogs, to people who have not done their homework or just don't care.

http://www.ytca.org is a great place to start your search.

http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html is also a great site on how to recognize a good breeder. : )

A puppy mill is a place that breeds dogs mainly for the money. They do not provide proper care for the dogs and puppies. They are increasing our unneeded dog population. Many pet stores get their puppies from mills. There are not teacup or toy yorkies, or any other breed. The teacup and toy are just poorly bred small dogs. Get the standard, they are such sweet dogs =)

BTW: Good job for researching these important topics before purchasing you pup =) Happy Holidays!

terms such as standard, teacup, and toy were created by back yard breeders to try to sell smaller dogs for more money. Go to the AKC Yorkie club and find out what breed standard is. base your puppy selection on that.

p.s. try your local animal shelter. they get small breeds in more than you'd think

there is only one type of yorkie, many people advertise them as 'teacup' or 'miniature' but really they are not separate types of yorkie, they are just smaller than the standard. i breed maltese and its the same, people advertise some of them as teacup but there is only one type of maltese, just different sizes! a puppy mill is someone who constantly breeds dogs just for the money, with no regard for the pups health or happiness

You got it! They are a toy breed and the teacups are just the runts that could possibly be very sickly and need more vet care.
