The simple answer is that most Americans can't read the Qu'ran in the original or have the patience to read it in translation. They also have no idea of the cultural context by which they could understand it, since it doesn't come out of the ancient classical worldview, which is the only historical view to which they been exposed. Hans Kung, a Roman Catholic theologian, has recently written a book on Islam, which makes a real attempt to understand Islam and may begin a more honest and balanced view, in the interest of interfaith dialogue. Neither Islam nor Christianity can afford to continue to talk past each other.
Grace be unto you and peace.

Depends on if you want to like it or not.
If you want to like a religion, go directly to the source. They'll tell you the sugarcoated story.
If you don't want to like it, go to an anit-whatever site. They'll tell you all the bad stuff. They'll prolly leave the good stuff out too, but that's your problem.
There is no way to get the whole story, really, 'cause you can never tell which side is lying and which is telling the truth.

You forgot Hollywood.
I think the best way to learn about a religion is to study what the founders did and then see how closely the actions of the followers match.

We watch TV and read the news papers and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that we don't want to live our lives like that. I would suggest that you visit a non denominational church for a small taste about Christianity, they will be no pressure.

You should learn about various religions through an unbiased source. Like an encyclopedia.
Edit: Who gave me a thumbs down for suggesting an encyclopedia?

One learns about Christianity by reading the words of Jesus Christ. You can get a Red-Letter edition of the Bible which highlights only the words of Jesus Christ, and will make for easier reading.

Approach knowledge with humility. This is the saying of Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him. We the Muslims need to abide by our own religious values. The last verse of Surah kafiroon "For you is your religion, and for me is mine". is quite instructive on the subject you have referred to.

You might learn a lot from the above. if I wanted to learn about mormonism,(for example) I wouldn't only listen to them, for they only tell the good parts.
