You have the most highy sought after platform on the web.. Virus and other malware authors target this as it is the most popular platform on the web.
Grisofts AVGFREE is a good product. Most of all you have to be careful where you click and what you click.. For instance if you are using a p2p network don't download wmv's.. stay with avi's or mpg's and if media player says it has the wrong extension delete the file.. same as with mp3's don't download wma's.. Even if you have only 1 pc invest in a router as it's firewall will protect you from a lot of the noise that is floating on the internet.
Stay away from the supersolution's like Norton or Mcaffee as they are bloated packages that can really slow down your system and make simple things almost impossible to do or to diagnose.
Every tuesday go to Microsoft Update and get all of the updates for your computer both the critical and the recommended..

If you have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1, you really need it, because it doesn't have a security options yet. But, if you have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, just use some lightweight AV softwares like Windows Defender and Windows Live OneCare (90-free day trial or Norton 360).

If the machine is connected to the internet, absolutely.
"The best" varies depending on who does the review and when. Kaspersky was the highest rated last I checked, but I don't keep up to date on AV software as I have little to no need for it and try to avoid any work that does.
