Use a warm-mist humidifier in his room. Don't keep it too close to where he sleeps, so he doesn't get scalded. Have him take a warm bath before he goes to bed. Rub Vicks vapo-rub on the soles of his feet, & have him wear socks to bed. This will help with any coughing. Also rub Vicks vaporub on his chest, throat, & put a little under his nose - that helps with the breathing.

There are a lot of things you can try.....children's sudafed is a great decongestant....it's the purple one, most places now you have to bring the little card to the counter and show an ID to buy it, but it does work really well. Vick's vapor rub...works well, but the odor aggravated my kids asthma, Ocean or other saline nasal drops help clear out mucus, I give my kids chammomile tea a lot....hot..but obviously not too hot.

Get him to inhale steam.I have a facial sauna that only cost me about £10 a few years ago.My family use it a lot when they suffer from a blocked nose.He needs to lay off dairy products at the moment as this will increase the thick mucus, and also needs to drink plenty of clear fluids.Hope he gets well soon.

Use saline nose drops. Sit with him in the bathroom full of steam. Use some vapour rub to make it easier for him to breathe. Make sure that his room is warm but not to hot as this can make it worse

It obviously depends on his age. Calpol works for younger children it sorts out everything, believe me I have brought mine up on it. If he has access to a steam room that is good or breath in steam from a bowl of boiling water with a towel over his head. Don't spill it though..If it persists for too long ask the pharmacist for something
