If you can't afford to keep her, it would be best to put her in a home where she won't be a burden on you. Maybe you could place her with a friend or family member, so that you can still visit her (?), and possibly even get her back if / when your finances improve?

If not, it would probably be best to put the word out with your vet and with rescue groups who can help to find her a terrific home. Please don't add her to the shelter population, or sell her to someone just because they have the money.

I'm sorry your in a situation where you may not be able to keep your dog. But you are to be commended for wanting to do the right thing.

Best of Luck!

Try finding a Golden Retriever rescue in our area. They might be able to help you find a good home for her. They usually only adopt dogs out by application only to be sure that the dog gets a perfect home. If you live in the Los Angeles area i know of some. Just whatever you do don't surrender her to the pound. She will get severely depressed and can get sick and die or they might euthanize her due to over crowding. Plus people who adopt from shelters tend to over look the older the dogs. Everyone wants to start fresh with a puppy.

If you absolutely MUST give her up, make sure you check out the home she might be going to. Don't give her to a shelter right away unless you can NOT find a home. Maybe see if your friends will be willing to take her for a bit until you get back on your feet. If not, try posting an ad at your vets office under 'free dog'. When someone comes thats interested, ask questions like "will you take care of her veterinary needs?" "do you plan on moving?"

make sure to get a cell number or atleast a home number do that you can call in and check on her. People have bad habits of abandoning free pets they get, and you obviously don't want that.

Contact a Golden Retriever rescue. Sometimes they can find homes for animals when owners are in these situations.

Your local shelter is also an option.

Don't try to sell it through newspaper classifieds!

Look up petfinder.com, and see if there is a golden retriever rescue group near you. Check anyone out you might consider giving the dog to. Also, ask the local vets.

What is your expense that is causing you trouble? Dog food is not too much. Shots once a year can be saved up for. Maybe you should make a choice and give up something else...if you want to keep the dog. Give up cable TV or Internet until you get back on your feet.

Sure wish I could take her. I love golden retrievers. Sorry I don't have any helpful suggestions.

Check with your vet and see if anyone they know is looking for a dog. Usually, a vet will let you put a flyer up for someone to adopt your dog too. You can also put an ad on craigslist and in the newspaper for your town. Good luck !

I suggest not getting any more pets after you turn this one in to an adoption center. You're evil and have no consideration for the lives of animals.

Rescue? Place an ad and screen potential adopters WELL. If she is spayed and up to date on vaccines, you should be able to find her a home. Check with your vet also. They can have some really good contacts.
