I was talking to an acquaintance today and the subject of going to Church over Christmas came up. I said that I would not be going as I wasn't a Christian he seemed first amazed, then shocked and then angry. I was perfectly polite and not deliberately provocative so why the anger? I'm not insulted that he does not share my beliefs.

People assume that if you don't believe, you think you are better or smarter than they are.
Your non-belief is a threat to him. It threatens everything he's believed all his life.

It's sad, really.

When you tell a Christian that you don’t equally believe in the false hope of being exempted for all the sins done by them, you are snatching away the only hope the modern Christianity stands on!

Don't do it next time please.

No matter they have their eyes shut towards reality and just cannot observe Jews who believe in being good doers & in good deeds. Same is the case with Muslims.

They both believe that it's their deeds that will settle their matter with God but Modern Christians have been shown the other door of amnesty & exemption with a condition of considering Jesus to be their saviour.

They have hopes that way we have hopes the other way. Let us all hope for the best!

God bless all of us, A'amin.

I think some Christians react wrong to those that dont agree with them. I am sorry that he was angry with you. I personally dont get mad when people dont believe and I am a Christian. Instead it makes me mad when people say bad things about Jesus and God. I does make me sad to hear when someone says they are not a Christian. I honestly want to cry. I read a lot of these questions like yours and I know you probably dont want me to, but I prayed for you. I am sorry if it makes you mad. It is just that the way I believe, if you dont believe in God and accept Him as your personal saviour... well you know the story I am sure... then you go to hell, and it makes me want to cry. I just cant stand the thought of someone going to hell.

I have witnessed Morman's being the nastiest of all and downright mean. I thought this female was going to stomp me or cast a spell on me at the least. All I did was say that I was Christian and not Morman. I tell ya, if looks could kill.

Some christians just can't get past the concept that there are some people out there who can lead fulfilling lives without the belief in their (that particular christians) chosen deity.

I suppose many tend to be suspicious... that is unfortunate. But if we have to find some justifiable reason for it, we may point the finger of blame at that very visible segment of atheists who make it a point to offend while declaring non-belief. It's become quite fashionable nowadays...

In your case, it may be that the person genuinely cares for you, but doesn't know how to react or respond. I would call it a personal character flaw.

I've been in that situation before, and like you i very politley told him I did not beleive.
i think they get angry because they are passionate about what they beleive, just like i'm passionate about my beleifs, although i don't get angry when someone disagrees with me.
i also think they get angry because if you don't share the same beliefs as they do they think your a "bad" person.
my opinion is based only on personal observation.

I wish you wouldn't generalize all Christians under one large ignorant umbrella. I am a Christian and it doesn't insult me at all when people don't believe - why on earth would I be insulted? Their beliefs are theirs, just as my beliefs are mine. Now, when someone says, "I don't believe in God because God isn't real and that's just stupid and you're an idiot for believing" I will get ticked off because that isn't just a difference of opinion, that is being rude and insulting for no reason.

Generally they can't justify their beliefs or behavior. Your choosing something different is a challenge they can't answer, and so they get upset.
