But the gifts didn't come till January if I am right...

..............One of the reasons behind gift giving was to commemorate the fact that God, the Father gave us His Son as a gift.................. so to remember that, we give our loved ones a gift. Of course it's all blown out of proportion now......

God gave us the free gift of salvation through his son Jesus Christ so that we can give freely to others using his example.
And since the Jews were giving gifts during Hanukka, a eight day Jewish holiday, gentiles and heathens and the unchosen ones felt left out and created the 12 days of christmas song so they could feel worthy like the jews.
