heresis (Gk) means choice. it means someone who chooses to believe things in a way different from the majority. since the majority is always wrong, you better be a heretic! "chris" to the contrary notwithstanding, someone who believes scripture IS a heretic. (and pretty much all alone)

When I left the last kirk I was at, I told the Pastor that I believed
that the parable of the prodigal son was a picture of all Israel
10Tribes & 2Tribes. The older son Judah & the younger son
Ephraim/Israel, I was told that was heresy so oops I must be
a heretic. I must admit I have never been so free. Its great.

FACTIONS:
Parties or sects within the Christian faith
developed early in the history of the Church as factions insisting on significance of certain tenaciously held viewpoints. These rigorously espoused views developed into
heresies, i.e.; doctrinesthat were contrary to view held in the household of faith. The principal heresies alluded to in the
Epistles ARE; [a] Those who corrupted the simplicity of the
gospel teachings [ 1 Corinthians 11:19; 2 Corinthians 11:3-4;
[b] those of the Judaizers, or adherents of the Mosaci rites and ceremonies [ Acts 15:24; Galatians 6:12],
[c] and those who tried to blend Christianity with a mixture of
demonology, magic, and various philosophies [ Ttus 3:10;
2 Peter 2:1; 2 John vv. 10-11]. "Heresy" aquired its present meaning -- departure from the fundament truth of the Gospel
--- early in the history of the Church [ 2 Peter 2:1 ].

a heretic is someone who goes against a certain religion, usually by lying or teaching things contrary to that religion.

ex. let's say there was a group of people who liked the color blue, but one day a guy says blue isn't the best color, or that purple is blue.

that person would be a heretic.

Anyone who promotes a religion other than Catholicism. ( I've never heard of any other religion call it's opponents heretics.)

First you must define exactly what is "orthodox." The Roman Catholic Church reached an agreement in the 4th century of what was "orthodox." Those who were not "orthodox" were heretics. There's a famous line someplace that reads, "If you're not with me, you're AGAINST me." (I think President Bush also used that line.) Many times I'm not "with" my friends/family, but in no way does that imply that I'm "against" them!

The word "heresy" was originally a synonym for "sect" or "denomination." In the post-Nicene era, it was used to describe the minority opinion in any religious council. These days it is used to refer to any belief that goes against the established orthodoxy of a religious community.
