I would have repeat x-rays taken between 45-50 days... closer to 50 days. 39 days is quite early.

Calcification of puppy bones occurs after day 40.. at day 43 you might see some "shadows" on an x-ray. Typically you do not x-ray to determine puppy numbers until late in the pregnancy (day 57) because at that time you should be able to see all the pups and a good reproductive vet should be able to tell you about how much longer it will be until pups come... (I had a vet who was good enough to give a 24 window.. and when she said "Monday" they would come then).
Repeated x-rays can cause harm to the pups... more harm the earlier into the pregnancy they are done.

Since you cannot see the skeletons on x-ray UNTIL after day 45....then do NOT go by the x-ray!!!!! If it was 39 days after the last breeding, conception may not have occured for a few more days, so you might not really be at even 39!!!!! I never x-ray until day 50 or later.
It is posible that they confirmed pregnancy on ultrasound and she reabsorbed the litter, but I would not go by any x-ray done at day 39. And I would be asking the vet WHY they would do one at that time.
She most likely IS pregnant and the x-ray is CRAP. WHy would you do an ultrasound at day 30, and they x-ray at day 39????????

The x-ray only shows calcified bone structure. At 39 days, the puppies bones may not have calcified yet. Go with the ultra sound results. Wait a week and re-do the x-ray.

neither ... 39 days is too early often to see skeletal components - often times it is more like 45 or so days before you can see them... also there have been instances where the heat cause from ultrasound imagery has lead to the breaking of the bond between the placenta and the uterine wall and the entire litter has been reabsorbed so I would at this point just wait -- maybe right before she is due get an xray and see if you can count skeletal components if there are any but otherwise, just wait and see and be prepared for a day 63 or 64 xray and possible intervention... Good luck...

You should trust the ultra sound. It is more sensative and sometimes puppies and sometimes even foriegn objects are hard to detect on an x ray.

Ultrasound is the most accurate that far along as x-ray can only detect bones and ultrasound does soft tissue. It is possible that she reabsorbed the puppies. Best thing would be to redo the ultrasound or x-rays at a later date, closer to term.
