I use my passport a lot with air and cruise travel and what I have noticed is that the airlines and the immigration officials run passports through a scanner that reads the identification number on the inside of the back page. I have never seen what comes up on their computer screen, and I am not sure if they allow passengers to see the information. BUT, I imagine that they are looking at your passport travel history and also checking to see if there are any security watches or other flags associated with your name. Especially since 911 that is the type information they are most interested in.
This is not a positive answer but my best estimate. Next time you travel with a passport ask what or ask to see the screen.

When people at airports check your passport they usually check the picture first and see if you look like that picture, and if you do then they check the date i think. It's pretty simple, just get a passport with a picture of you in it (make sure it looks like you) and your done.

If you mean luggage, it depends. Sometimes they look at your passport, ask a question or two about the purpose of your travels, then let you go.
A very, very small percentage...if suspicious of foul play...will be asked to search luggage. I've never seen that happen, though.
