Tequila doesn't mix well with other liquors, and don't junk it up with stuff like Rose's lime juice or soda unless you've bought the bottom of the barrel tequila, but as you say, you've got "prime" tequila.
To get the correct tequila experience, don't drink anything that doesn't say 100% agave (like junk like regular Cuervo or Sauza). These are cheap poorly made tequilas designed to sell to college kids to get drunk. They are only 51% real tequila, and the rest are fillers like corn syrup and grain alcohol (and thus the hangover the next day is born).
The aging has a lot to do with the taste, so try a few to see which style you like best, and then remember how the aging is labeled:
Blanco (because it's totally clear) - no aging
Reposado - minimally aged at least 2 months, but can be up to 1 year
Anejo - heavily aged, minimally 1 year but less than 3 years.
Some really expensive ones can even be aged longer than that, but you'll want to work your way up to those.
The classic mixed tequila drink is, of course, the margarita. For the perfect margarita, do the following:
2 oz blanco or reposado tequila (anejo is a waste in a margarita)
juice from 1 lime, freshly squeezed
1 tablespoon agave nectar (similar to honey but from the agave cactus) or bar syrup
splash of water
You can add an orange liquor if you like, but avoid triple sec and go for a higher grade one like Grand Marnier or Cointreau. Add no more than 1 oz or it will be too orangy. Personally I like mine with no orange (after all these are French, not Mexican liquors, so you know it's not traditional in Mexico).
Mix well and serve over ice.
You can also do a variation on the Bloody Mary (traditionally a vodka drink) and use tequila in place of the vodka. Then there's also the tequila sunrise which is vodka & orange juice.
Don't underestimate sipping a premium tequila either straight or on the rocks with a squeeze of lime. Just don't shoot premium tequila shots.

I'm with Christopher K on this. If you have Prime Tequila such as Patron Silver or Platinum, it would be a waste to mix it with anything or even chase it with anything it ruins the smoothness of the tequila and doesn't make it feel as royal as it is supposed to. And KJ you're an idiot you don't mix water with any type of liquor that will only get you sick.

A prime tequila? If it's a reposado you may wish to sip it neat and enjoy the dry herby flavour. An acquired taste perhaps.
Otherwise make a margarita, very fashionable some years ago. You'll need some Triple Sec, not cheap so give it a miss unless you're serious.
Mix 'em with lemon/lime juice (used to get "margarita mix" but haven't seen it lately). You don't need it & it was overpriced anyway!
Proportions? However you like it. Have fun trying....

I wouldn't mix a good tequila with much of anything. I would squeeze some limes and mix in the tequila with some water and shake it good with ice. You could even add a dash of orange juice.

Hey John, if you have a killer Tequila, you need:
1 shot glass
1 lime, cut into quarters
a salt shaker
Pour the Tequila into the shot glass, lick the back of your hand and add a bit of salt to it, grab a lime wedge and lick the salt, shoot the Tequila and bite into the lime.......If you need a demo, or visual aid, I'll be more than happy to show you the proper technique......sometimes it takes MANY shots to get it down right......Enjoy!!!

You could make a margarita. They're really good. All you need is 1 part tequila and 3 parts tequila mixer and ice cubes. Blend everything together in a blender and pour into glasses and serve.

Fill a shaker two thirds full with ice, and add a large (50ml) shot of tequila, a small (25 ml) shot of Cointreau and a small shot of fresh lime juice. Shake and strain into the glass. Have fun.
