It's a sales gimic. For example - there are airlines out there (cough cough Spirit Airways cough) that offer incredibly cheap one-way fares. Yet, it is not stated that in order to qualify for the one-way fare, you need to purchase a round-trip. The return leg is always much more expensive. Let's consider this for a minute (and it will show you that the average person just doesn't do the math...);

Two sales one regular fare:

"Blowout sale" - MIA-JFK $9.00 USD*

"Super Saver Fare" - MIA -JFK $89.00 each way.

"Regualr Fare" - MIA - JFK (roundtrip) $168.75.

* indicates one-way fare with the purchase of a round-trip ticket. JFK-MIA return leg listed at $225.00 USD.

So, now which is the best fare?

Just remember, always read the fine print, and always use a calculator.
