Don't leave it out of your sight, and punish it the same moment it does it. Dogs tend not to learn when being punished a while after they have committed the crime, you have to catch them in the act.

I read a good example ones, someone asked why his dog wont stop to chew up the newspaper the moment it comes through the door, even though he punished his dog every time as soon as he came home. The answer was, that the dog had a lot of fun chewing the newspaper, and when the owner punished him for it, the dog probably thought it didn't make the pieces small enough since "everyone" knows that chewing up newspaper is necessary ...

Try using non-toxic, foul-smelling substances on objects that are frequently chewed. Ammonia is a good deterrent for dogs, but may be harmful if your dog continues to chew.
If you prefer a more disciplinary approach: after your dog chews on something, stick his or her nose to the object and spank your dog.

A chew toy is a double-edged sword. You are teaching your dog to chew, but this will also relieve his or her urges to chew things. You can try getting a chew toy with a hollow center, which you can fill with peanut butter or a liver paste (most retail stores carry this). This will make your dog want to ONLY chew that toy because he or she receives a treat when he or she chews it.

Personally, I would combine all of the methods mentioned above. Good luck!

There is a spray in pet stores to make dogs quit sleeping on couches and furniture. Spray it on all those items that you don't want him to chew on. Two weeks of bad experiences + a chew toy that does not taste bad will cure him.

Well, first question of mine is have you put obedience training on him and if so have you done any sports with him? You also failed to mention the breed, as this contributes to several questions that may be shot at you. If you have done obedience training and are currently doing a sport with him or keeping him active then closest thing I can say is get him some stuffed cow hooves and maybe challenge him further in obedience.

Try bitter apple spray. Or put some pennies in a tin can and shake it at him when he starts chewing. The loud noise will startle him.
