Frequently, yes! Religion aften informs a person as to how they relate to the world and their place within it. Believing that a god loves you affects you. Believing that you are unworthy of the great sacrifice Jesus made affects you. Believing you are part of God's chosen people affects you. Believing you have a connection with divinity affects you. Viewing ourselves as tiny specks in a giant universe affects us, as does believing humanity is the pinnacle of God's creation.

The results, however, are highly individual. Even two people sharing identical beliefs can view themselves radically differently. Christians can become humble or arrogant from the same message. They can feel it is their place to be meek and kind and caring, or that they must smite the unbelievers who squandor God's great gift.

Definately. Your religion, or belief defines you. It says who you are and what you will or will not do. (Or at least superficially we tend to see eachother that way.) I am always baffled by the non religious. They seem to believe what the media tells them. I think that those who embrace a religion atleast use history and books to find what they are looking for rather than tumble around and try everything... it never works. We're just people. We are capable of much, therefore we need direction.

I think so... some religions have books where the congregation must repeatedly chant "I am a sinner, I am not worthy" and I generally stink as a human being types of stuff. How could that not convince people they're bad?

Tell me... do you think that being told how terrible you are every single day and that you'll never overcome the things you do wrong unless you beg forgiveness of some superior person above you would affect your self image?

YES OF COURSE.
