Most DVD drives these days can Read both formats, but usually the write in only one . It all depends on the drive's firmware. Companies also will need to pay both the -R and +R camps for royalties, so cheaper drives support only one write format.
Unless you have an old DVD player that can't read +R, it should not matter to you. As I said, players these days read both -R and +R; however, they may not be able to read +RW.

No hack needed, DVD RWs are re-writable, meaning you can use them like a giant floppy disk. DVD R disks are worms. (write once read many). meaning once you burn it, it's burnt, but the same drive can do both.
