"Thou shalt have no other gods before Me"

My pastor says "Whatever we cherish that tends to lessen our love for God or to interfere with service to due Him, of that do we make a god." Doe Jesus count?

That's a way of interpreting the statement without acknowledging that there were multitudes of other gods who were worshipped long before Jesus showed up. I think it's just a warning against worshipping those older gods, because Christianity was all about stamping out Pagan beliefs and gods.

I really don't get it how does it mean it is admission from God that there are other gods besides Him or before Him!!!
Definitely this is impossible
Does Jesus count?! .. well this is a very good question..The answer is Yes.. simply because worshiping Jesus as a God is a very big sin because Jesus is not God or son of God ..he is a man ..he is a great prophet.

You asked "Does Jesus count?"

That depends. Certainly, Jesus is worthy of considerable reverence (worship), but even he directed that all the glory go to his Father in heaven, namely Jehovah.

The problem with most so-called christian religions today is that they exalt Jesus as the Most High, a position he never claimed. Doing so is in violation of the scripture text you quoted.

Granted, Jesus is the name given by which men might be saved, but his role is still "Son of the Most High God" in the scriptures.

EDIT: Note, however, that the reverence due the Christ because of the role he plays is Jehovah's purposes, is relative reverence to Jehovah himself.

Simply an admission by God (or the men he had write the Bible) that there are other Gods, thus proving the Bible errant. Once a book (or witness) is disproven, how can you trust other statements made by the same evidence.
God admits there are other Gods, According to his word, thus it must be true.

I think I technically follow this commandment being an atheist. Though some of the other fictional gods are much better than the Christian one - The Flying Spaghetti Monster is definitely better and nicer. Thor is a lot cooler. Also Dionysus - come on, a god of booze who wants you to get drunk? How cool is that? Actually it's hard to imagine a WORSE god than the Christian one!

We can worhip Jesus, it's just stuff that comes before Jesus. Like, if you are a sports fan for example and you put sports before God, then you are worshiping another "god" or like an idol. Or let's say you really like this one celebrity, if you put that celebrety before God, than you are worshipping another "god"

For some people money is god, others it may be power, others their physical beauty or anything that has a higher priority in your life than God.
