No I do not believe that they are cowards. It is sad that one can become so emotionally exhausted that they feel that the only way to cope with the pain and agony of the turmoil is to hurt themselves. I think that the coward is the person who willfully takes other persons lives without re guard and then kills themselves. I hope that death is not the true reality. I guess that I will know one day. I feel that death is part of the journey and that that journey is defined by how we live and how we benefit others from having lived.

As someone who is suffering from clinical depression and post traumatic stress disorder, I find the idea that we are cowards offensive.
I have tried to take my own life multiple times. I was abused, molested, orphaned, and neglected. I have jumped off high ledges, I have overdosed and cut myself with intent to kill, and many numerous other things.
Suicide occurs when you are stressed beyond your ability to cope. Everyone has different limitations. Your body releases chemicals when you are stressed that affect you in various ways, mostly with a rush of adrenaline and being hyper alert to your surroundings. (the "fight or flight" instinct).
You get trapped in a mental repeat of whatever negativity is affecting you. You feel alone, and hopeless, and in pain. The majority of attempted suicides admit to "not really having wanted to die"...
BUT THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THEY TRIED! It really is a mental condition the person /cannot control/. I have someone with me at all times now because when I am out of that chemically altered mental state of despair, I know that I want to live and am continually making progress.
But if something triggers me into a deeper level of clinical depression, I can't stop myself. There is nothing worse in the world then looking inside yourself at your own soul and finding yourself lacking.
People who are suicidal are often compassionate, victimized, generous souls who through events OUTSIDE THEIR CONTROL are forced to believe (whether true or false!) that they are a disgusting individual, unworthy of love or help, and that they're benefitting society by ending it.
Reach out with love instead of your petty insults. You who call people who committ suicide "cowards" are only adding insult to the already injured souls of your fellow human beings who deserve your pity and empathy, not your sharp tongues and hostile hearts.

Not always true. Some are, yes. But there are many whose lives are so messed up that they see no other way out. One of my closest friends committed suicide. He had been abused as a child, and was bi-polar on top of it all. His medications lost their effectiveness, and the new ones didn't work. Before they were able to find meds that did work, he's committed suicide. Do I think he was a coward, no. He was in a great deal of emotional pain, and wasn't right in the head. I dearly miss him.

False. Depression is a terrible illness. It makes people feel like they are worthless and a burden on their family. As a result they may take their own lives. It has nothing to do with being a coward.

No. I think that people who commit suicide have lost the battle with depression. It certainly takes courage to fight that battle. But to call someone who commits suicide a coward strikes me as uncharitable and unjust. A more compassionate attitude would be more appropriate.

I am sure each and every person has their own reasons
some may find it to be the easiest way out
some may do it because they feel things would be better without them ( which is quite selfless in a way )
some may not mean to go fully through with it
who knows , but the person themself
we cant judge

The late & Great -Hunter S. Thompson was definately NOT a coward! He was sick and tired of being in pain all of the time, and didn't want to be remembered as an old crippled man in a nursing home. He didn't want to be pushed around in a wheelchair.
He went out "with his boots on"... as they say.
So no, people are not cowards.

Some suicides are cowards who want to end their alleged suffering. More commonly, suicides are viscious people who kill themselves in order to hurt those left behind. "You'll be sorry when I'm gone!" is the last thing such people say. Then, they kill themselves in order to make parents, spouses, etc, feel guilty. It is an attempt at a sort of psychic murder...a living death in which the parent/etc is supposed to suffer in anguish all the rest of their life; dieing a little bit each day, yet living to die a bit more tomorrow. People who try to pull this on me get disappointed. When the say to me:"you'll be sorry when I'm gone." I reply with: "Don't bet on it." So far, those who have threatened me with their suicides are still alive. Those who threatened suicide to others, killed themselves shortly after those others expressed fear at the thought of their loved ones' impending suicide. No one is 'destined' to die by suicide. In any event, the world has enough people who want to live, but can't-children with cancer, etc-and these get my sympathy. People who can live, but who choose to not live, get no sympathy from me.

I think that someone who commits suicide simply cannot stand the thought of living one more minute and don't think their death will really upset anybody because they feel so unloved and uncared for. There are many people who I am sure would have killed themselves but have not because they didn't want to hurt the people who love them.
