Craigslist. Also, just keep your eyes open, on Ave. Y, near the Brighton line subway overpass I saw an early 90s Accord for sale for $480 the other day.

If you do not know how to maintain and repair a car yourself, or do not intend to learn...or you don't want to pour a lot more than 500 dollars into it...you pretty much can not buy a usable car for under 500 dollars.
The only exception is if you have a friend or relative who is looking to unload a beater.
I mean...there's a CHANCE you might find something that runs, or something that only needs a little work for a couple hundred dollars, but you're looking for a needle in a haystack. The needle is that one car that actually runs and won't leave you stranded or kill you, the haystack is hundreds or thousands of worn-out methmobiles that wouldn't even make it to the scrap yard under their own power.
You won't start seeing many decent cars for the non-expert until you get over 1000 dollars.
Junkyards sometimes have running cars for 500-1000.
If you want to try your luck, watch Craigslist and local classifieds.
Hmm...you might have better luck getting a worthwhile motorcycle for 500 bucks.

Your probably not going ot get something good or safe for around $500. Add another 0 onto 500 and you will find a lot more. For $500, get a used, beat up Civic or a big American Car.

WOW! $500 for a car. That will be tough. Maybe you should not worry about a car right now and get a job and worry about saving money for a car that costs a little more. A $500 car will not be very reliable and will not be in good condition at all. I'd just save every penny or I guess try ebay or your local bargain finder or auto magazine.

You won't get a good car that cheap. Anything you find for $500 will be in need of constant repair and won't be worth it at all.
I admire the fact that you're trying to buy a car on your own, but you really need to save up more before you go and buy one.

check your local newspaper or eBay and see what you can get. There is also car trader magazine that you might be able to find one or a sheriff's auction. Plenty of diff places.

buying a car that cheaply will cost you more money, first you have to get it inspected, and that could be expensive to have the repairs made to get it to pass, unless you're extremely lucky to get a fantastic deal for a car at that price

tow yards sell cars that have been on-site for too long at good prices, just do a good check on the car you want. junk yards r another good starting point, again, check the car out w\DMV and carfax.com.
