The second commandment "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain".

To some its just fun and God as our friend, should be mentioned (even in a light harted way) often as a way to honor Him. Is it a sin (4th) to use God's name in trivial matters or thoughtless repetition of His name?

I saw Bruce Almighty and while there were things that some Christians wouldn't agree with, I can see the point behind it. The movie was written by a Christian, by the way.

If man could have God's power, he >thinks< he would do a great job, but he would really just screw things up.

Did you not also notice that things got better for Bruce after he said, "I surrender to your will?" There was a very good Christian message in the movie even if you didn't agree with every scene.

The movie shows that you don't need to beat people over the head and tell them how bad they are to get your message across.

Becoming a Christian isn't about fear of hell. It's about wanting to be part of God's plan and the love that He showed for all when He sent His only son to the cross for the sins of the world.

There was a time when blasphemy was important because the church had the power to kill anyone who committed the offence. Today (Thank the Lord) it's a trivial nonsense --- and the world is slightly better for it.

yeah i dont know... i mean i used to think that saying "OH GOD" was blasphemy but seriously is God really gonna get worked up about that? i think it means to use the Lord's name to justify a sin. like "Well God told me to steal that" or "God wanted me to kill him" the Crusades are a perfect example of this, as is the Spanish Inquisition. I dont think it's a sin to use God's name as to have a little fun, as long as the fun doesn't dishonor Him. but when you start using God's name to justify evil, then it becomes blasphemy

I think God probably enjoyed "Bruce Almighty." There was nothing blasphemous about it, and since we have a sense of humor, I think He does too. (He probably liked "Oh, God," too.)

taking his name in Vain means to say you are a Christian and not do anything about it......or saying you believe in God and not acting like it. That is vanity. I don't know where the other definition came from but there is more to it than using him as a cuss word. Vanity is something that is EMPTY.

The movies Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty are very blasphemous. No true Christian should watch them.
