God/Goddess loves itself. When we know what we are we can love ourselves as well as the other. Great question. : )

God is merciful towards all including atheists; Saints cannot be atheists; Saints are sent by God to the world;
Some sages, however, may be impersonalists but not atheists;
A Saint is greater than a sage; By sadhana, one may become a sage (Rishi) but not a Saint; A Saint is sent by God only;

Friend,
Does not shine on atheists?
GOD is the embodiment of LOVE and Compassion.Then how can we imagine that HE will love some and will not love some.HE loves all equally whether they believe in Him or not.
That is His nature.
He knows when the atheists too take a round about turn and come to Believe Him.may be in next birth or sooner.
He is Omniscient.So His love showers equally on all.
If we put some thing to block it, like an umbrella to block sunlight, it is not HIS fault.

Oh! Even if it hurts, the bitter truth may be God loves them even more!
There is a better possibility that they would 'reach' Him faster, with that bold declaration, refusal of blind belief!
In Hindu mythology, the 10 'avatars' guaranteed liberation to the chief 'villains' (the asuras) at the end always, though it is their atrocities that compelled God to incarnate!

I find great comfort in the fact that God, Truth, & Reality are not dependent on my acceptance, understanding, or beliefs. There is none who can lay claim to the entire Truth. Errors in thinking & belief in all are corrected gently in each of us as we continue this journey & as a whole explore all possibilities. What is there to condemn? Would I turn my back on my own child if she woke one morning convinced I did not exisit & therefore she could not possibly be of me? Of course not, with love & patience I would wait knowing most teenagers rebel & realize this is part of her journey of growing up.Sometimes I think people make God so small to keep themselves small, it can all stay much more manageable that way. We are all the same, equally loved, should we not love all equally?
Blessings!

O, but of course HE loves them.
HE is LOVE......but he is fair, too......so I guess many of them will repeat the lessons of life till they'll find themselves in God(whatever they could name him).
But,.....who am I to Judge.....because there are believers who make more bad to this world in comparison with some atheist.
You know what ...: I think that God doesn't see us like atheists and believers (only we do this) because He can see us (the real us).
WE ALL ARE BROTHERS ! How could a father/mother to love some of us more like others ?

If you believe in god then yes that rule probably applies, if you know that god id imaginary then I guess you dont care if he loves you, just like you wouldnt care if the tooth fairy loved you.

Yes, atheists are loved by God as well. Every living thing is loved by God. It is not about Gods love however. God is in every one of our hearts, but it is up to the specific individual whether they want to accept that or not.

When you are Happy you Howl and thats inherent to you, right? Can you control who hears it or not? No naa?
Does this Earth not accept in its bosom the one who tends it and grows food and the one who spits on it in the end?
Similarly God's love knows no bounds it envelopes all in its divine embrace.
Atheists are like those Kids who dont want to recognise their parents, yet they have them and are loved, aint it?
Ok now I know you are smiling, so lets howl!

Reg Atheist, i would say is a path in spiritual progress, and i would say they are one step ahead of a basic theist in their progess in spirituality!!!
Great saints as you said were atheist at one instance of time in their spiritual progress. Even Mother Theresa in her dairy wrote she wondered in her early stages of life why should we pray and what is the use of it!!!
