* I want to crate train the pup, but mom has run of a portion of the house during the day. Will that be a problem? Will mom try and get the pup out or be fine?

All it takes is time with the pup every day. Training can be as simple as shutting its mouth with your fingers every time it nips you and saying firmly, "No!", even from the very beginning of play.
Crate training is perfectly fine as long as you make the place a comfortable place to sleep with an old blanket and a chew toy. Let the pup out when it is being good, never when it is whining or barking. It sounds mean, but it prevents unneccessary barking while it is in its crate while traveling in the future. Let the mom sniff around. Keep the pup in the crate only for a few minutes each day, you know, ten minutes at a time, so it gets used to the idea quickly. Then you can increase the time up as the pup grows.
Good Luck. I have 4 dogs and we crate-trained them as they have to travel in the back of the truck long distances. They take it in stride now.

The mom will not interfer with the pup. Just wait until the pup is 8-10 weeks old to start the training. You don't want to seperate them before that.
