If you want to watch the movie on a standalone dvd player then you need to convert (a.k.a. recode) the .avi video file in to a mpeg-2 video file. Once saved as a mpeg-2 file, you can use DVD Shrink or Nero's Recode to shrink the video to fit on a DVD blank. I am surprise to hear that the .avi was too large to fit on a DVD+R blank since the .avi video files are usually small (i.e. .avi is a compressed video file type). Nevertheless, here is what you need to do:

1. Download DVD Flick, which is freeware. DVD Flick will convert your .avi video file to mpeg-2. The download site is http://dvdflick.sourceforge.net/

2. After installing DVD Flick, please follow Lifehacker's tutorial on how to use it to convert the .avi file

http://lifehacker.com/software/dvds/hack-attack-burn-almost-any-video-file-to-a-playable-dvd-232322.php

3. After converting the video file, you can use DVD Shrink or Nero's Recode to shrink the file down to < 4.7GB so it can fit on a single sided DVD blank. If you have Nero Express, you can use it to burn the file on to a blank. If you don't have Nero Express, you can use the free BurnAware. The download site it http://www.glorylogic.com/

I recommend using DVD Shrink over Nero Recode because, in my personal experience, DVD Shrink is much faster and easier to use. The same is true with Nero Express and BurnAware. I would use BurnAware over Nero Express. It's faster and easier.
