Hmmm...
Lots of misinformed and downright dumb answers here, as there always is about this particular subject.
The truth -
Both LCD and plasma televisions have a life expectancy of around 60,000 hours.
Both LCD and plasma screens suffer from burn (an ATM screen, where you can witness this effect is actually an LCD...).
A 37" LCD will use about 250 watts of electricity - a 37" plasma will use about 300 watts of electricity.
And before we get any of the truly idiot answers, plasmas AREN'T filled with water, they DON'T have oil that needs changing and they DON'T heat your room.
If you want the reality and not the B.S., checkout the website below, which explains why 63% of the population prefer plasma televisions:

If you have the kind of money to afford a 42 - 50" screen then go for Plasma. LCD cannot cope with picture integrity and colour over 37".

LCD's are cheaper, last longer, and are better in general
In plasmas the life is shorter, and they began to downgrade over time, they also use much more power.
The picture will be similar and if anything better on a very good LCD

Plasma screens degrade throughout their (short) lives. Also they are very power-hungry. Go with LCD.

Defo go for LCD. As parspants says, they do degrade. Not only that but they have a very short "burn-in" time meaning if there was a logo on display then it would "etch" itself onto the screen. You might see such examples on old ATM machines etc.
